In the wide-open skies and rolling plains of Texas, there’s a story waiting to be told through your lens. At Texas Photography Workshops, we offer two immersive learning experiences that take you from your first confident clicks to capturing the raw beauty of the American West. Whether you’re just starting your photographic journey or ready to fine-tune your craft, these classes cover the complete gamut of photography — with the heart of Texas as your backdrop.
1. The Basic Photography Class — January
This is where it all begins. Our Basic Class lays the groundwork for your lifelong photography journey, helping you truly understand your camera and how to make it an extension of your vision. Over the course of the class, you’ll learn:
-
Exposure fundamentals — mastering aperture, shutter speed, and ISO
-
Camera-specific settings — unlocking your camera’s potential
-
Composition and framing — creating stronger, more impactful images

-
Practical shooting exercises — applying your skills in real-world situations
This foundational workshop is designed for all levels, but especially those new to photography or looking to strengthen their core skills. By the end, you’ll not only understand your gear, you’ll be confident using it in any scenario.
2. The 5-Day Rodeo & Western Lifestyle Workshop
If the Basic Class is your groundwork, the Rodeo & Western Lifestyle Workshop is where you build the house — with details, character, and soul. This five-day immersive experience dives into the finite details that elevate an average photo into an unforgettable one. And it does so with an emphasis on one of America’s most iconic subjects: the cowboy way of life.
From roping and branding to cattle herding, from the dust and grit of the arena to the golden light of sunrise and sunset chuckwagon shoots, you’ll be surrounded by scenes begging to be photographed. This workshop is about more than technical skill — it’s about storytelling.
The Joe Duty Difference
For over 15 years, Joe Duty has been teaching photography workshops in and around Wise County, Texas, welcoming photographers from across the U.S. With more than 20 years of photojournalistic experience, Joe knows how to record a story as it unfolds — and how to teach that skill in a way that clicks. His approach blends the practical application of technical know-how with the artistry of visual storytelling, ensuring students walk away with images that don’t just capture moments, but tell the tale.
Why These Two Classes Together?
Think of the Basic Class as your foundation and the Rodeo & Western Lifestyle Workshop as your refinement. Together, they cover:
-
Technical mastery — from exposure to camera control
-
Artistic development — learning to anticipate and frame the decisive moment
-
Cultural immersion — experiencing and preserving the cowboy tradition through your lens
The result? You’ll be equipped with the skills, confidence, and creative eye to approach any photographic challenge — and succeed.
